Smelter Service Corporation Gives to Backpack Program for Second Holiday Season

December 7,2012

For the second year, Smelter Service Corporation collected items for the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program. Smelter Service employees donated almost 3,000 individual food items including juice boxes, individual cereals, animal crackers, canned entrees and fruit cups which will support a month's worth of meals for the children that benefit from the Backpack Program.

Each Friday, the Backpack Program provides over seventy children at Mt. Pleasant Elementary, Highland Park Elementary and Hampshire Unit School with a backpack filled with items like milk, juice, canned entrees, cereal and snacks. Without the food provided by the Backpack Program, these are children that may otherwise go hungry. For more information on the "Food 4 Kids" Backpack Program and to learn how you can offer support, email rhonda.malugin@gmail.com or call Rhonda at 931-379-0297.

Columbia State Community College Visits Smelter Service Corporation

June 21, 2012

On June 20, 2012, Smelter Service Corporation proudly welcomed a Physical Science class, composed of mostly education majors, from Columbia State Community College to visit its facilities. The goal behind the visit was to illustrate the importance of green recycling processes for the future of the environment. Using recycled material for new aluminum products uses 95% less energy and produces 95% less greenhouse gas emissions than making aluminum products from new materials-a significant lesson these future educators can one day hand down. The day began with a presentation by SSC team members in the areas of chemistry, mathematics and environmental safety which was followed by a tour of the operating facility. "We greatly enjoyed having the class visit our company because they were inquisitive and very interested in our processes. Smelter Service is looking forward to hosting more groups like this in the future," Crystal Preslar, Communications Coordinator at Smelter Service Corporation. Mt. Pleasant based Smelter Service Corporation has been recycling aluminum since 1978. For more information on Smelter Service Corporation, please visit www.smelterservice.com.
